MOTOGP-INSPIRED KTM 990 RC R REVEALED

The covers are taken from the MotoGP-inspired KTM 990 RC R, which is about the closest thing to a street racing bike…

The MotoGP-inspired KTM 990 RC R will roll off the Mattighofen production line in early 2025 and will be homologated for street use. KTM claims the street racer will “deliver unparalleled performance while embracing the practical demands of the road.”

The prototype version of the 990 RC R will appear as a wildcard entry in non-point scoring outings in selected European Supersport series.

KTM has recorded a multi-part behind-the-scenes documentary about the R&D journey of the 990 RC R and its entry into the supersports sector. You can watch the first episode now via THIS LINK.

KTM says the 990 RC R has been in the making for years and has been developed from a wealth of data collected through the company’s successful involvement in GP racing, including MotoGP. The bike represents the natural evolution of the current KTM RC series, but its sporting potential allows for an easy conversion to a KTM 990 RC R TRACK edition, debuting in the second quarter of 2025.

The road-legal KTM 990 RC R features a 57kg EURO5+ ready LC8c, delivering a claimed power of 94kW (128hp) and 103Nm at 10,500rpm. The bike’s steel frame is designed for dynamic performance, with greater weight towards the front. It features a special 25-degree steering head angle and offset for better steering response. It has a cast aluminum subframe.

According to KTM, “ergonomics are key to the behavior of the KTM 990 RC R. Long-term experimentation allowed the six contact points on the tank to better connect, lean and ‘tuck’ to ensure comfort, as well as support for knees, arms and lower pressure on the hands. A new fuel tank is formed as the main part of the ergo. Adjustable footpegs come into play, as does the fully adjustable WP APEX Open Cartridge Suspension, lightweight cast aluminum wheels wrapped in Michelin tires.”

MotoGP-style aero wings developed in the wind tunnel provide stability during braking and cornering.

KTM says minimal adjustments will be required for the transition to the KTM 990 RC R TRACK edition; the mods remove the legal essentials, include protective components and add a racing body and full exhaust system.

“The KTM 990 RC R is a groundbreaking innovation for those who live for the thrill of cornering,” said Riaan Neveling, Head of KTM Global Marketing. “It’s for those who lean close to the road, almost brush their knees, and then push the limits and drag their elbow to the asphalt on the track. This bike offers power and prestige without the exorbitant price tag. Finally, we can unveil our KTM 990 RC R and introduce a truly exceptional motorcycle to dealers in early 2025, fulfilling the expectations of countless riders and racing enthusiasts.

“Our Duke Range and other Street products have developed a loyal following because of their distinctive character; we believe the KTM 990 RC R will quickly achieve cult status because it excels at the two things it is so remarkably well designed for. The success will be evident on the track, but the unparalleled experience for customers on the road will truly differentiate the company.”
